After leaving school, Elizabeth did a Foundation Course in Art and Design at Manchester Polytechnic. She then did her degree in Fine Art at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, where she won both the John Christie Prize for Painting and the Oliver Hicks Memorial Prize. She worked at a photographic library and studio for several years before she organised her first painting holiday in Tuscany.
Elizabeth has always loved painting landscapes and in 1995, she returned to Tuscany to paint the region’s extraordinary landscape. Whilst there, she organised her first classes and workshops in the town of in Cortona.
In 1997, Elizabeth decided to settle in Tuscany and she has been painting and exhibiting in the region ever since. She now lives in Montisi, part of the Comune of Montalcino in the Siena area. You can visit her studio in the centre of the village.
Tuscany is a land of contrasts, with its rolling hills and olive groves, hilltop towns and medieval cities. I finds the combination of its light and rhythms an ideal inspiration for my work. The colours change during the seasons and every time of day.
In my watercolours, I seek to depict fleeting moments – sunsets, rolling clouds, misty sunrises and the effects of light. And in my oils, I like to portray the rich textures, colours and shapes of the Tuscan landscape, described by dark shadows and intense light.’
